Acco's APU Life

Day13

2011/12/07 Wed.

Today, I had the meeting hosted by APU and met APU students.
APU works closely to educate students from abroad in order that they can work in Japanese companies at a similar level with Japanese so as to speaking and business manner. Students from abroad I met spoke Japanese very fluently, not just fluent but could use polite words in the right way.
Much better than my English… ><

After that, I took a writing seminar. The programs were fundamental such as how-to-organiza story, transition words, topic sentence…
I wrote papers and thesis in my student days but I've almost forgot such things. So the seminar was very useful to recall how to write an essay or paper in English.
I have to write two 3000-word term papers by the end of semester.

Zhi-san invited me to dinner again. His MaBoDoFu is always awsome.

Day12

2011/12/06 Tue.

In APU there is a popular event called multi cultural week to promote a specific country throughout a week. During the week a specific country's various events are held in a campus by students from the country.

This week is Sli Lanka week. Sli Lankan dishes are offered at Cafeteria. I ate 3 types of curry and soup for lunch. I love hot and spicy tastes so I enjoyed Sli Lankan foods. During the lunch, I saw Sli Lankan girls dancing at a stage. The dance was cute. I plan to go to a grand finale Sli Lanka week on Friday at the University hall.

After classes, I visited SALC again and met another Vietnamese TA. She was also talkative and told me a lot about APU and her experience of intern at Japanese company.

Many APU students from abroad are really eager to have a job in Japan. One of the reason is that it is a strategy of University to send many international students to Japanese companies. All English-based students are required to finish a Japanese language intermediate course, so both Japanese and English are common languages in the campus. APU also offers Japanese business manner seminar to students from abroad, such as how to use polite form or a lecture of must-to-know cultures to work in Japanese companies so that they can fit the Japanese company easily. Other reason is that students motivation to have a job in Japan or Japanese company is high. They seem to admire Japanese companies and Japanese life in Tokyo ( I might have a biased view... ) Chinese students have different reason. It is much more difficult to find a job in their home country because job-hunting in China for university grad becomes highly competitive recently.
It is a high season of job hunting and there are many students wearing recruit suits in campus, most of them are not Japanese.

Day11

2011/12/05 Mon.

TA (Teaching Assistant) in SALC (Self Access Language Center) told me that the fastest way to improve my English is to think in English so I try to write this blog in English occasionally.
If you find something wrong with my blog, I appreciate if you correct me :-)

Today, I had 4 classes. The first class of the day was International Management at the 3rd period. During the class, I was awarded a red band for the good essay which I submitted last week. I was really relieved because I had despaired of the difficulty of the requirements. That was really good news.

The red band

The next class was Media and Politics. Dr. Takekawa let us watch the first 10 minutes of "All the president's men" to demonstrate the watch dog type media, which means investigative journalism. 10 mins was short but enough to see it is interesting so that I'll try to watch all later.

The 3rd was Marketing. The agenda of the day was moral and ethics of the company. During the class, Dr. ALCANTARA presented a very interesting question.

"Your boss handed you a stack of private strategic documents from your company's closest competitors. The documents are marked "proprietary and confidential" that were taken by your boss right off the competing firm's server. Using this confidential information will certainly give you and your company a competitive advantage. What would you do?"

I was a bit surprised because most students from abroad were so aggressive that they agreed to steal the information. One of them said he could not reject the order of the boss in a Japanese company, or someone said that he should steal because everyone does. If I were him, I would consult with the other bosses at the higher position in the company, and if all of them agreed to steal, I would start to find other job. If the fact that we stole information from the competitive company happens to be disclosed to customers, the company will lost the credibility from their customers. it is depends on the degree of importance of infromation but I don't think it is reasonable to take such a high-risk activity. Such a good company person I am ;-p

After the classes, I went to the SALC to talk to a TA for English speaking training. TA was a very talkative Vietnamese girl. She encouraged me to come to SALC everyday to improve English speaking skill so I will try to do that.

Day10

2011/12/04 Sun.

  • iPod for windows 反対
Apple
  • G4 cube

next-> next step
